Although this song is credited to the great Arthel 'Doc' Watson, to quote the liner notes of "The Doc Watson Family" (Folkways 1963), "legends of its origin and claims to its authorship are many." It is alternately credited to B.F. White, Adger M. Pace, Elder John Ellis, and William Walker among others. We figured we'd give our few mechanical licensing dollars to Doc though, for his general fantasticness. Please buy the great Doc Watson Family album, which features a wealth of great traditional songs and amazing singing.
